Shawn Peter Raul Mendes (born August 8, 1998) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and model. He attracted a following in 2013, when he began posting song covers on the popular video sharing application Vine. The following year, he caught the attention of artist manager Andrew Gertler and Island Records A&R Ziggy Chareton, which led to him signing a deal with the record label. Mendes went on to release an EP and his debut studio album Handwritten, whose single "Stitches" reached the top 10 in the U.S. and Canada, and number one in the UK.
Early life
Mendes was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and was raised in Pickering, a suburb of the city. He is the son of Karen, a real estate agent, and Manuel Mendes, a businessman, selling bar and restaurant supplies in Toronto. His father is Portuguese (from Algarve),[1]while his mother is English. He attended Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering, Ontario.

He first started posting cover videos on the popular social video app Vine in 2013 and picked up millions of views and followers in a matter of months, becoming well known for his six-second snippets of renditions of many popular songs.[3] By August 2014, he was the third most-followed musician on Vine.[4] Artist manager Andrew Gertler discovered Mendes online in January 2014, bringing him to Island Records where he eventually signed and released his first single "Life of the Party" in June 2014.[5] He is the youngest artist to debut in the top 25 with a debut song on the Billboard Hot 100, making to number 24 for the week ending July 12, 2014, at 15 years, 11 months and 4 days of age.[6]

Prior to his signing, Mendes toured as a member of the MagCon Tour[7] alongside other young artists and social media sensations.[8]Mendes was also on a nationwide tour with Austin Mahone as an opening act and released his debut major label EP in July.[9] The EP debuted and peaked at number five on Billboard 200, selling 48,000 copies in its first week.[10] He won the Teen Choice award in 2014 for Webstar in Music.[11]
On April 14, 2015, Mendes released his full-length album Handwritten, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart with 119,000equivalent album units, selling 106,000 copies in its first week.[12] However, it suffered a 89% traditional sales decrease in its second week.[13] The third single from the album, "Stitches", peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first top 10 single in the US[14] and later his first number one on the Mainstream Top 40 chart.[15] Mendes recorded a song called "Believe" for Disney Channel Original Movie Descendants.[16] He also opened for Taylor Swift during 1989 World Tour dates for North America.[17]
Mendes was listed among Time's The 25 Most Influential Teens in 2014[18] and 2015.[19] He also made his first appearance on a Forbes list with their annual "30 Under 30", for 2016.[20]
In late 2015, Mendes and Camila Cabello from Fifth Harmony released their collaborative track "I Know What You Did Last Summer". The song was included on Mendes' Handwritten Revisited reissue.[21] Mendes appeared on The CW's The 100 third season premiere on January 21, 2016.[22] In January 2016, "Stitches" reached number one in the UK[23] He later announced his second world tour as a headliner, which will visit North America and Europe, starting in March 2016.[24] Mendes signed with modeling agency Wilhelmina Models in early 2016.

Zain Javadd "Zayn" Malik ( born 12 January 1993), who records mononymously as Zayn (also stylised as ZAYN), is an English singer and songwriter. In 2010, Malik auditioned as a solo artist for the British reality television music competition The X Factor. After being eliminated as a solo performer, Malik was brought back into the competition, along with Harry Styles, Niall Horan,Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson, to form the boy band One Direction. During his time in the group, Malik and his bandmates released the albums Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), and Four (2014).
In March 2015, Malik's representative announced the singer's departure from the band. Malik signed a solo recording contract with RCA Records in 2015, with his debut studio album Mind of Mine released on 25 March 2016. The album and its lead single, "Pillowtalk," both reached number one in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, with Malik becoming the first British male artist to debut at number one in both the UK and US with his debut single and debut album.

Zain Javadd Malik was born on 12 January 1993 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.His father, Yaser Malik, is British Pakistani, and his mother, Tricia Brannan Malik, is English and part Irish, and converted to Islam upon marriage.[4][6][7] He has one older sister, Doniya, and two younger sisters, Waliyha and Safaa .He was raised in a working class family,[4] and grew up in a working class neighbourhood.[10]
Malik grew up in East Bowling, located south of the Bradford city centre. He attended Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School in Bradford. Malik has said that he did not fit in at his first two primary schools due to his mixed heritage of Pakistani and English. Malik has stated that he started taking pride in his appearance after moving schools at the age of twelve, and as a teenager he took performing arts courses and appeared in school productions. He grew up listening to his father's urban music records, primarily R&B, hip hop, and reggae, as well as Bollywood music.He starting writing raps when he was at school,and sang on stage for the first time when singer Jay Sean visited his school. Malik also did boxing when he was 15 to 17 years old.Prior to his music career, he was originally planning to pursue an English degree at university.

2010–15: The X Factor and One Direction
In 2010, 17-year-old Malik auditioned in Manchester for the seventh series of reality-television competition The X Factor. He sang "Let Me Love You" by Mario as his audition song and was accepted into the next round.[17] Upon auditioning for The X Factor, Malik stated that he was "looking for an experience".[18] He was eliminated before the final round of the competition,[19] but judges Nicole Scherzinger andSimon Cowell grouped him with fellow competitors Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson to form a new act for the remainder of the show, the boy band that would become known as One Direction.[20] The group quickly gained popularity in the UK, finished in third place, and were subsequently signed by Cowell to a reported £2 million Syco Records record contract.[21] They subsequently signed in North America with Columbia Records.[22]

One Direction's third studio album, 2013's Midnight Memories, was a commercial success as well. Its number one debut on Billboard 200 made One Direction the first band in history to have their first three albums all debut atop the Billboard 200. With their fourth album, 2014's Four, they extended the record to four consecutive number-one albums. As of March 2015, the band has sold 6.49 million albums and 23.7 million singles in the United States.[30] The group has sold more than 50 million records globally.[31] Malik quit the band on 25 March 2015, citing his desire to live as a "normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight", after signing off from the band's On the Road Again Tour for an indefinite period six days prior due to stress.
